3. MAPPING THE WORLD

In so many places at once
The buzz in the brain spawned
A nursery of faculties.
First to surface
In the thick of commotion
Was a drop of honey
Iridescent with concentration.
In fact,
It was Attraction incarnate
Taking up residence in the confines
Of the head to manage
The onslaught of impressions
Plaguing Little Spirit to no end.
A wiggle here a wobble there and
Without much ado
A triangular house of mirrors
Two-way facing
Sprang up around the lucid mass
The atmosphere within the chamber
So static impressions riding
The magic carpet of reflection
Flocked to and from the chamber
At the speed of light.
Commotion within
Agitates impressions slumbering
In the outskirts
Reflection recalling the look-alikes
In energy content
To the chamber where
In that spectral atmosphere
The new and the old impressions
Overlap and align on a holographic screen
And behold—
Cognition has occurred.
During cognition
In the overlap on the mental screen
Two other things happen:
The differences between the old
And the new impressions strike clear
And since the old repulse their look-alikes
Only new impressions whisk
Via mirror reflection
To their respective repositories
Outside the chamber."

Recall the cognitive rooster image
To the mental screen.
In the overlap you notice
Feathers of a different color,
One comb leaning the other upright—
Each discrepancy detailing enriching

And what if the color pleases the eye
The smell of feathers wrinkles the nose
Claws scratch the skin
The crow charms the ear
And the taste of rooster soup
Still warms the gut?
What is Little Spirit to make
Of this confusion?
Attraction takes care of that—
It pulls the different sensations together
Into a single vibrant chord—
A feeling—
That fluttering jittery inviting or
Repulsing wave of resonant sensations that
Twist the gut, pinch or sooth the heart
Sends shivers up and down the spine—
Chord after silent chord feelings
Letting you know whether the sight
Of a rooster has made Little Spirit
Take a leap or a plunge—
An inward leap energizing uplifting
An outward plunge a slump
A setback.
Attraction sorts out the feeling later:
Never ceremonious
It plucks the image clean
Of impressions—separates
The vibrations pulsations and wavelengths
Received by each grace
And dispatches the separate batches
To their respective repositories
Outside the mirrored chamber—
One for eye ear nose touch and taste.
In the repositories
Energy impulses register in scales
Akin to rainbow colors and are
Encrypted encoded likewise.
Next time you see a rooster
The live image switches on
The energy pattern specific to roosters
Which recalls the scattered raw impulses
To the holographic screen
Where they align with the afterimage
Of the rooster strutting in the yard
And you know at once whether
The rooster is the same one."

The bedrock of all your mental

Image patterns holding
Cognitive information
Feeling patterns
Behavioral instruction.

In energy content and
While scanning patterns for
Clues to cognition
Attraction often agitates
Vibrations or pulsations of things
Unrelated in space and time—
A sunset may bring up
A trip long forgotten
The angle of light
The face of a sleeping child
And a song may sound blue
A taste feel hot sharp or crisp

Attraction picking up similarities by
