5. INTERNAL NETWORKING

"Dreams daydreams and imagination
Were groomed to engage feelings—
Feelings the live wire
The lightning rod between
A point within and
A point without.

In dreams
Images act out a feeling's sensations
To highlight some present unrest.
In daydreams
Feelings sort out and anchor
Stray impressions.
In imagination
Emblazoned images intensify
A feeling's hidden message.
Images
The language of the initial system
Enabling faculties to commune with
And engage each other."

"You fall asleep when the graces
Put down their instruments
And Attraction
Relieved from channeling impressions
Reviews the day's input—
Checks every connection
Adjusts the smallest indiscretion
Orchestrates the changes.
But there is no need to dream for that—
Every time you sleep
Attraction wipes the slate clean
For tomorrow.

Dreams invade sleep when
At some juncture of your life
Underground tremors ruffle
Your waking hours.
You have a dream when
In the deep of sleep
The agitated feeling calls up
To the mental screen images
Clinging to it.

In dreams
Feelings mute before
Talk to you—images
Roused by the self-organizing
Principles telling you how
Your past responds to
What goes on
During the waking hours.

Dream images are apparitions
Come from the dark netherworld
Where experience is scripted in code
Inaccessible to the waking mind.
Stranger yet is their behavior for
These phantom images
Perform in solemn ritual gestures
Acting out in hauntingly stark detail
Events meant to waken specific sensations
So you the dreamer
Captive in the wings
Be witness to how
In the stomping grounds of your past
Events of the day play out.

Say you dream your father
Telling you something important
But upon waking
Do not recall a single word.
The dream is not about your father
But about the feeling clinging
To his image—the dream father
A messenger delivering
Pertinent information—
An intimate gesture of affection
Rejection or encouragement
You once felt in his presence—
The dream a clue as to which feeling is
Haunting your daytime hours.

When a dream hits the mark
You wake up sweating heart pounding.
If you fail to read its message
The dream comes back to haunt you.
But if the feeling projected in dream events
Churns inside you long enough
The dream casts light
On the present state.

Dreams may puzzle the waking mind
But they leave behind implicit directives
What to daydream about or to
Elaborate upon with imagination."

"You daydream when
Due to excessive sensory stimulation
Snippets of images loose disjointed
Keep drifting across the mental screen
Crowding the antechamber.
In that nebulous atmosphere
Daydreaming does housecleaning—
It rids the chamber of the backlog.

When remembering
Images come up in real time and
Behave in real space as real things do.
When daydreaming
Fragments of images float across the screen
One pulling up another until association
Pin-points a match in your past—
The past supplying a clue—
Anchoring the fragment
In a personally meaningful setting.

Say a friend's face keeps floating in
And out of mind all day long—
The other day
Something in his voice clashed
With his facial expression.
When you muse you daydream—
Sift every word he said
Every twitch in his face
Through the finest sieve of feelings
Vibrant in the background—
Association rummaging the coffers of
Your past for a matching energy spark—
Then suddenly you know—
Your friend was not saying
What was on his mind.

Likewise
Say a dish outrages your mouth
Yet a breath later
It pleasures the tongue.
If you take time to daydream
The aftertaste will bring up samplings
Of spices until one teases
The outrage into pleasure.

Daydreams refine patterns
Not by addition of detail
But by splitting sensations into
Ever finer more subtle shades
The spectral repositories receptive to
Endless refinement of sensation.
Daydreaming is the cradle
Of investigative thought.

Unattended to
Residual overload is apt to
Muddle attention even create confusion
States that need stretches of calm
To resolve the clutter."

"In daydreams
Only fragments of images
Appear on the mental screen.
In memory you are one other
Thing remembered.
In dreams you are
Either a captive observer or
An actor caught in a play.

Imagination
Puts you center stage upfront
Endowed with exquisite powers—
The vaguest provocation
Your slightest inclination
A command.

When imagining
You can choose the setting and the players
Direct the show and decide the outcome
And discard what scares or fails
To please you—
Imagination casting you into
Enticing and foreboding situations
For you to observe yourself in action—
In events imagined you find a self
Of many faces capable of
Unspeakable deeds and
Heroic feats as well.

Imagination rides association
Picking up adornments borrowed
From images unrelated in space and time—
Attributes that will render an image
Or event outrageously attractive or
Disturbingly repulsive—every bit
Intended to raise the pitch
Of the underlying feeling.
Exaggeration—
Making mountains out of molehills—
Enlarges a feeling and brings up close
Facets dormant within it.

When imagining
In the safety of your mind
You live out your dreams
Negotiate the options discover your
Inclinations your fears your joys
And your limitations.
Events imagined prepare you
For the future—
They pave the yellow road
That stretches ahead
As life goes on.
What you dare to imagine
You may as well become."

"And who watches the spectacle
Who takes notice?

Awareness does.
Awareness—the quicksilver bubble
In the level of Little Spirit
Riding the waves.
Seated in the narrows
Between body and mind
One finger on thought the other on flesh
Sensing every shift in balance
Awareness works with Little Spirit
Hand in hand."

"So it was when
The one-seed juniper
Took root on the shores of
The dried-up ice-age lake.
So it was when
In the light of a flickering flame
Your ancestors exchanged utterances
Laden with meaning.
When hunger polished the edges of danger
Danger sharpened the tools for tomorrow
Tools soothed the sting of fear.

In those distant times
A budding mind reached
For the heart of experience—
Intuition
The intimate pre-knowledge
Resting in the pool of experience
Supplied visions to aid orientation in
Unfamiliar situations.

A mind rooted in pre-knowledge
Saw the world infested with forces
Sensations mean and benevolent informing
Warning your ancestors.
The world then was
A mirror held up to you
You a mirror to a world
Bristling with spirits.

Today,
If by chance you glimpse yourself
In that darkening mirror
You enter a realm where the link
Between the inner and outer worlds
Is unbroken."
